Holy days

ថ្ងៃសីល

Thngai Sil, the observance days

Buddhist holy days, known as Thngai Sil, fall on the 8th and 15th days of the waxing moon and of the waning moon, four times in each lunar month. Because they follow the moon, the dates change from year to year.

On these days, lay people may keep the eight precepts, offer food to the monks, listen to the Dhamma and sit in quiet meditation. Families are always welcome to join us.

On a Thngai Sil day

  • Keep the eight precepts for the day
  • Offer food to the monks
  • Listen to the Dhamma
  • Sit in quiet meditation

The eight precepts are the five precepts, plus abstaining from eating after midday, from entertainment and adornment, and from high or luxurious beds.
